    Fintail engine pics.

The work involved is to recuperate a 6 cyl. engine from a 1967 Fintail 230 and install it into my Fintail 200 that has 4 cyl. I want to place into my 1956 190sl.
I commenced the engine and transmission removal off the Fintail 230, I towed from Miami to Lavaltrie Qc. this spring. The brake booster is already transfered to my Fintail 200 and working strong. I checked the differential ratio on the 200 and 230 and they are the same, also I do not have to remove the one from the 230. The 230 carrosserie is aready sold to a guy in Quebec City, owner of a rusted 200 1966.
As you see, I do not have hydraulic platform or lift to do the job, but with some planning, work is relatively easy and safe.
To date I was unable to remove the first exhaust section from the manifold, it is cooked in place.

    Andre
That is a big job you are taking on 3 engines out & put 2 back in .I have been watching for a 200 Fintail ,but no luck so far.
My overhauled head seems to be running well with the stainless steel shim ,but I am still getting some antifreeze weeping on the side of the block ,but I still have to do a retorqing of the head after I get some miles on it.Thought I might add another 5 lbs.
Are you going to take your 190 engine out from the top or the bottom .
With all this rainy wx we have been getting in Ottawa .You could change a engine & not miss any good driving time .
    Keep us posted.

    Jim,
I found easy to lift up the 6 cyl. engine, also the other engines will follow the same route. I will do that in September after most car shows are done.

    Re: Fintail engine pics.

    Slow progress,
I removed the 200 engine 4 cyl. to replace it with the 230 6 cyl. engine. I had checked the 230 radiator fitment for the width but not the height. I see now that the cross bar supporting the bumper is lower under the 230 radiator. I have now to buy an universal radiator if I find one, or to modify the front cross bar.

PS: cannot find a radiator, also the cross frame is under modifications.

    Fintail engine pics.

I decided to enlarge the 200 radiator opening to fit the 230 radiator. I welded a HRS 1x3, 1/8 thick under the existing cross frame. I cut the old frame afterwards. I had also to relocate the panel on the driver side to get 21 ˝" clearance. Some paint over that and it seems very acceptable and strong. Next step will be to fit in the radiator with some rubber padding around.

To look to what I did.
First one is original from inside engine compartment .
Second to show the HRS welded.
    Third is the overall modifications.

    Re: Fintail engine pics.

It was a long job to fit the radiator in the available frame. After I installed the fan, I noticed it touched the bottom of the radiator. I had to remove it and pushed it half an inch forward. I found easier to remove the radiator from the front instead in between the frame and the water pump.
The 230 Fintail had the power steering which I do not need on my 200. The crankshaft pulley had 3 grooves, one for the alternator and water pump, the second for the power steering and the third for AC. I cut the third one and will install AC on the second one. I had no choice to remove one, the sway bar touched the third groove.
I lifted the 230 engine with a chain hoist instead of the electric hoist I had, after noticing the landing of a previous load was erratic and reading the warning on the body that it was not approved for vertical use.
I had also to remove the water pump and the alternator to be able to enter the 230 engine in the compartment.
I installed the coolant expansion tank and filled up the circuit with antifreeze.
Next to do is to install the transmission along with drive shaft.
I changed the 200 logo on the trunk for a 230.
    There are the last news.

    Re: Fintail engine pics.

The clutch is activated with an hydraulic slave cylinder. I flushed the circuit backward several times using pressure from the front brake. The clutch pedal did not come back also I installed a spring to get it up momentarily.
I started the 230 engine and it worked fine even with no choke because the 200 Fintail had a manual choke and the 230 carbs had an electric one I did not transfer.
I am unable to get in gears, the clutch slave cylinder is not pushing enough to disengage the pressure plate. Next task will be to adjust the cylinder travel close to the pressure plate release point and later to remove the clutch master cylinder connected mechanically to the pedal. I will check for a leak sending the oil to the reservoir instead of keeping the pressure inside the cylinder, helping to retract that pedal.

I adjusted the slave cylinder travel close to the fork and now I can switch gears. I drove the car with the 230 engine which deliver more power but with more noise. I will have to check exhaust pipe for leaks. Idle speed is around 1800 RPM, I will have to tune choke and idle screws. In case of rattles, I will switch to Webers.

congrats on getting to drive it! I am curious about how you resolved the clutch not moving all the way back. You mention an adjustment on the slave cylinder? Can you elaborate? Does the clutch work normally now?

    Re: Fintail engine pics.

I had too much play between the slave and the fork. I extended the slave cylinder pin to touch the fork just at the beginning of disengagement. This allow the clutch pedal to shift gears. For sure the clutch engagement is done when the pedal is very low. This is not the best way, but I can drive her expecting time to do more.

    Re: Fintail engine pics.

After running the 230 engine for 5 minutes on the road, the coolant temperature reached 225 deg, F. I stopped the car, let her cool down and enter her in the garage. I removed the radiator and flushed it from top to bottom. I noticed that the flow was restrained probably due to tube plugging. I decided to do the repair by myself. I removed the bottom cap using a propane torch and a thin stainless steel blade. With a piano wire I cleared all the plugged tubes, probably 2/3 of them. After a good flush, I solder the cap back. A pressure test done revealing no leaks. No more over heating after that.
This to tell everybody having a similar problem on a 190 sl, not to hesitate to do the job, it is easy and fun to do.

    Re: Fintail engine pics.

I want to buy piston rings for my 121.940 engine and searched on Google to find Hastings making them. I wrote to them to get a quote, but no answer. Is somebody knowing where to buy them?
I found a supplier in Netherlands at 180€ total, but prefer to buy USA stuff.

Another resource for rings is Deves piston rings in Los Angeles.
