    Cool 220s Ponton vs AMG 55 V8

I've been enjoying my SL, and now it's time to start on the Ponton I bought a couple of years ago. I just bought the donor car last week - a 55 AMG CLS that has the 5.5l supercharged V8 I needed.

We will remove the engine, box, loom, ecu etc from the AMG and retro fit it all into the ponton shell. Obviously we will start work on the shell in order to strengthen it all first.

If anyone here is interested I'll keep you posted on this build.

Here are pics of both cars.

Yes, very interested in seeing the work in progress!
But the CLS is very repairable, removing the drive train to install into a Ponton seems to be a very costly adventure. Moreover the engine is large, I hope you took all measurements to be sure it will fit. Good luck!

A supercharged V8 Ponton!! You clearly have too much time on your hands Stu! However, it sounds a very interesting project and we would love to see how you progress. A brave man!

Clearly way too much time ... Lol. Sounds like an awesome project. Will you be keeping the stock suspension? Definitely upgrade the brakes to handle that kind of power! I would think a minimum of 15" would be required for a descent enough brake caliper to fit.

How is the 190SL coming along? did you ever get the windows and hardtop to fit right?

Too much time - yes fair comments... but hey, you only live once don't you. Why not be a little silly and have an AMG supercharged Ponton. Suspension will be an airbag kit so that the height of the car can be controlled. The brakes will ideally be the 8 pot brakes from the CLS if we can make it work... so that rules out 15's (by a margin). I'm sure its going to be a project that many on here don't relate to - but its an excitingly creative one in my eyes.

I'll make no bones about it - its a 'silly project' that will be hugely intrusive to the Ponton. Much of it will be modified and it will never be the same car again as a result. We will have to cut the inner wings, widen the arches - remake the transmission tunnel... the list goes on and on. Not to mention the work needed to avoid twisting and also to mount the CLS rear diff/ engine / brakes / cooling / exhaust.

The CLS could easily be put back on the road and a small profit made - but its a dating car that will only ever depreciate and eventually die when the love dries up. The Ponton is an unloved classic in a poor state... so why not combine the two and hopefully come out with something that will at least be remembered... and hopefully loved by some.

If it doesn't bankrupt me, it will be a great project to play with, and learn on. Its way over my skill level, so I've got a pro doing all the clever bits on the build & the ECU integration (so its not a total death trap).

Absolutely loving the SL... it gets rather a lot of interest around Mayfair and Chelsea and you make many friends which is fun. I've not sorted the hardtop yet, but I'll do an update on that post with pics. I typed it out last night but the images were over 2mb and it failed before my batt died.

    Cheers,

    Stu

Here is some progress - the CLS has been scrapped, and the front subframe is partly installed.

I'm on the hunt from flooring for the ponton if anyone knows a good place.

    Hi Stu,

I just saw another approach, although I like yours better, here : https://www.facebook.com/Biox-perfor...47594458884965

I am not sure we can compare the two but I just wanted to share..

I recently attended the Legends of the Autobahn in Montery. John Olson (SL Letter) entered his 300SE32, a W112 coupe outfitted with the AMG supercharged V-6. John also fitted the car with the donor car front and rear suspension plus the electronics and instrumentation. Send him a email at office@SLLetter.com.

I've toyed with a 190sl with an SLK35 chassis. They are the same wheelbase.

Sorry I've not been on here for some time. I think I saw that other build some time ago, but forgot it. There doest seem to be any synergy to me.
I'll email John and see how he got on too.
Work has been stalled for 6 months and is due to start in 1 month.
    I'll keep you posted

    Thanks,

    Stu
