    1955 190sl Frame Off Restoration

    1955 190SL Body # A1210425501240 FRAME OFF RESTORATION

The goal was to restore this car to its period-correct state close to when it came off the assembly line. Paint, interior, engine and transmission, options, electrical and wheels are all original specifications. More than 1250 individual parts were used in this restoration.

    Year: 1955 SLR**
    Make: Mercedes-Benz
    Model: 190-Series
    VIN: 1210425501247
    Transmission: Manual 4 speed
    Engine: 4 - Cylinder 1.9 L
    Exterior Color: Medium Blue DB-350

    Top Color: Dark Blue
    Interior Color: Natural 1068

    Body Style: Roadster
    Title Status: Clear

This 1955 Mercedes 190sl is a very early 190sl (#1240) with the correct Gullwing seats and no clock on the glove box door.

**NOTE: According to the factory data card, this car left the factory with the SLR (Rennsport) options, option SA 55056 SportWindschutzscbeibe (racing windshield), and option SA 55039 SportwagenTuren (cut-down sports car doors). Speculation is that only between five and seven sets were actually delivered to customers. Unfortunately, I do not have these options but they are available from some of our Club Members. With the Factory Documentation (build sheet) showing these options and having them with the car would dramatically add a very high dollar value to this car. You can buy the Rennsport options for this car, but you cannot obtain a build sheet!

The 190sl comes with books, repair manuals, misc. tools and jack.

The gauges were rebuilt to factory specs by VDO-YAZAKI CORP.
The Becker Le Mans radio with Reims Adapter was fully restored by Becker of North America.
Interior, top, carpets, boot, etc. by Ron’s Restorations.
    Interior is Natural 1068.
    Paint is Medium Blue db350.
    Dark Blue German top.

    FACTORY INSTALLED OPTIONS.

Becker La Mans Radio with Reims Adapter.
    Brake Booster
    Electric Antenna
    Kinder Seat
    Flash to pass headlight switch
    Windshield Washer
    Locking Glove Box
    Left Side Heater Blower
    Bumper Guards
    Etc.
See the complete list of options and read about this car in the 190sl Group Newsletter article shown following.
This car was featured in November/December 2004 issue of the newsletter Volume 22 Issue 6 of the 190sl Group Newsletter. See page 3504 Article titled "Rarer Than Rare".

In my opinion, it will be hard to find a nicer and more correct 190sl than this one. This car excels in quality and craftsmanship. Look at all the other cars, and look at the work that might be involved in getting a car to a point that this 190SL is already in.
If you purchase this car, you are purchasing an investment, not a project. If you are looking for an investment grade 190SL, this may just be your car.

The current owner is an active member of the International 190sl Club, and has put love and attention into making this 190sl the best it can be.

Re: 1955 190sl Frame Off Restoration

    Ready to drive and show.

    1955 190SL Body # A1210425501240
Complete ground up restoration. The goal was to restore the car to its period-correct state close to when it came off the assembly line. Paint, interior, engine and transmission, options, electrical and wheels are all original specifications.
The gauges were redone to factory specs by VDO-YAZAKI CORP.
The Becker Le Mans radio with Reims Adapter was fully restored by Becker of North America.
Interior, top, carpets, boot, etc. by Ron’s Restorations.
Interior is Natural 1068. Paint is Medium Blue db350. Dark Blue German top.
The car has less than 600 miles since restored.

According to the factory data card, this car left the factory with the SLR (Rennsport) options, option SA 55056 Sport Windschutzscbeibe (racing windshield), and option SA 55039 SportwagenTuren (cut-down sports car doors). Speculation is that only 5-7 cars left the factory with a build sheet showing the SLR options. If the doors and windshield were acquired, I do not have them, the value of this car would go up greatly as it is factory documented.
It is loaded with factory installed options. Here are some of them: Becker La Mans Radio with Reims Adapter, Brake Booster, Electric Antenna, Kinder Seat, Flash to pass headlight switch, Windshield Washer, Locking Glove Box, Left Side Heater Blower, Bumper Guards, Etc. See the complete list of options and read about this car in the 190sl Group Newsletter article shown following.
This car was featured in November/December 2004 issue of the newsletter Volume 22 Issue 6 of the 190sl Group Newsletter. See page 3504 Article titled "Rarer Than Rare".

    Priced at $135,200.00

How does one do a "frame off" restoration on a 190SL? What does "frame off" mean?

Re: 1955 190sl Frame Off Restoration

Perhaps there is another word to use but every nut and bolt was removed and everything was removed that could be removed from the frame & body. This included the front & rear suspension and everything attached to the underside.
    What word would you use?

Re: 1955 190sl Frame Off Restoration

"Frame Off" is a bastardized phrase made popular by the Corvette community to describe a situation where the body has been removed from the chassis. How someone came up with "frame off" rather than "body off" makes no sense whatsoever and the phrase persists among a portion of the Corvette group (and sometimes other types) who are trying hard to impress through their use of words without understanding the meaning of those words. Considering how a 190 SL is constructed, neither "body off" or "frame off" seems correct. In your case, "complete restoration" would be more than adequate and certainly accurate.
