Wheel 'Beauty' Trims - Slotted or Plain ?

Many 190SLs seem to have been delivered with 'slotted' wheel (beauty) trims, others are 'plain'.

This thread shows the original 190SL prototype with 'slotted' trims.

You can see a variety of slotted and plain trims in the Sales Brochures on the Technical page ...

    1959 - 63 : http://www.190slgroup.com/tech/det_brocB.htm

Does anyone know whether there was a reason why cars were delivered with slotted / plain trims ?
Did it relate to the wheel size (eg 13" vs 14"), country of delivery, production month etc ?

My car has slotted rims - but other cars in our club have plain rims.

    Very curious ...

I'm not sure "many" were delivered with slotted trims, but your "many" may be different than mine. Bob Platz insisted none were, but I think he's wrong. I know of a late 1962 all original that had slotted rings on it. But, in the years I've been involved with 190 SLs and other than what you pointed out in literature and prototypes, I don't know if I've seen a handful or even that many "real" 190 SLs with slots. Also, like other situations, it might correlate to "what was on the shelf" as the car came down the line.

Pictures of '62 in original owner's garage (6500 miles in 2007), in CT. The reseller who bought the car swapped out the slots for plain, picture in Arizona.

The date stamped on my 190SL slotted rims is June 1961.

The car was picked up in Stuttgart in June 1961 by my secretary so I'm confident they are original.

(I still have her note on picking up the car.)

My slotted rims are original. I was told that they were on the showroom at that time and buyers could pick.

The slots look pretty sharp on silver cars, just say'in.
