    Celebrity original owners

I've been conversing with Rich Arnold regarding the two original owners of our cars. Most of you know that mine was Count Bernadotte of Sweden, but you probably don't know that the original owner of Rich's car was Yul Brynner!

I got to thinking that there are probably a lot more 190SL's out there with famous people as original owners, so I thought it might be interesting to put a pictorial together showing famous original owners!

If possible, post a picture of your famous original owner next to, or inside the car when they owned it. I'll start it off, but unfortunately, I don't have a picture of the Count and the car together. However, I DO have a picture of the Count and his wife that he sent me 20 years ago with I first started researching the car.

So, here's my contribution... Count Lenart Graf Bernadotte and wife Sonja.

My 1958 190SL was purchased on March 28, 1958 by stage and screen actor Yul Brynner. Mr. Brynnner purchased the vehicle in Vienna Austria during the filming of "The Journey" and drove it through Europe before shipping it to the states where it was purchased by my father on December 4, 1958. I subsequently purchased the SL in April 1970.

I have been in contact with Mr. Brynner's son Rock who confirmed ownership of the SL but have been unsuccessful in locating any photographs of Mr. Brynner posing with the SL. I am most fortunate however that prior to his death from lung cancer in 1985, Mr. Brynner autographed a photograph of my SL which was also documented on the attached letter from his assistant. I use the photograph as my Avatar for this web page.

I'm not sure if this qualifies under the famous owners category, but the original purchaser of my car, my father, was the engineering head of the Manhattan project and was responsible for the construction of the Oak Ridge plant. He was also responsible for the siting of the Los Alamos facility - my two brothers went to a dude ranch there before the war.

It was on loan from Max Hoffman Motorcars (New York) to make the movie High Society in 1956. It's a 56 Roadster with DB180 paint (Silvergray Metallic) and red leather interior. Not sure whatever happened to it, but it's rumored that it was given to Grace Kelly because she fell in love with it. Not sure if any of this is true or not, but it's a nice story! Sure would like to know where it is now...

    Other Celebrity Owners

According to the Internet site of the German Mercedes Benz R129 SL-Club (http://www.129sl-club.de/start.html?/ns/inhalt.php) there were quite a few Celebrity 190 SL owners, not all well known in the US. Below is a translated paragraph from this site:

“The 190 SL won beauty competitions in Holland, Switzerland and in France at the Grand Prix d'Elegance in Cannes. In the English-speaking part of the world the car was endowed with such flowery statements as "A dream comes true", "Sweetest thing on wheels" or "The sports car you've waited for". Also the car had success in GT Class Sport Rallyes, like the Tulip Rally in Holland, and with the running in the "Big Prize of Macao“. Public figures like prince Rainier of Monaco and Grace Kelly, Gina Lollobrigida, Gunther Philipp [Actor], Bibi Johns [Singer], Margot Hielscher [Actress/Singer], Freddy Quinn [Actor/Singer], Toni Sailer [Olympian, 3 Gold Medals in Skiing/Actor], Ingrid Bergmann [Actress], Francoise Sagan [Playwright, Novelist, Screenwriter], Nadja Tiller [Actress] and the Maharani of Jaipur as well as crown prince Hassan of Moracco and many others called a 190 SL their own to drive. A total of 25.881 190 SL’s were built between 1955 and 1963 and sold at a price of about 17,000 German Marks.”

While the above is definitely not an exhaustive list, you can see that not only well known US celebrities owned the190SL, but celebrities the world over were intrigued by and owned the 190SL. According to reasonably reputable sources on the internet Frank Sinatra owned a 190 SL and even Ringo Starr was one of the prominent "Pilots" of this “Cult-Object”. Ringo Starr's SL, incidentally, had logged in only 23,300 miles (37,280 km) before being turned over to the Stuttgart Museum. By the way, the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart also has Grace Kelly’s 1958 190SL roadster. Finally, let us not forget Rosemarie Nitribitt as a “Celebrity” owner.

I vaguely remember Zsa Zsa having a weekly TV show in the '50's. the show always began with her driving up and stepping out of a 300SL Gullwing. This photo could be from the same show but I am pretty sure I remember being impressed with the way the door opened. that is a '58 Oldsmobile convertible in the background so the time frame would be about right.

    Dave,

    Interesting recollections.

From the looks of the front turn lenses and the metal framed sun visors I would put it an a 1957-1958 SL also.
