    Celebrity Owner List

Given that the 190 SL is something of a glamor car, I thought I would put a list of famous owners together. Here's what I have, so far. Any changes/additions, anyone?

    190 SL Celebrity Owners

The 190 SL won beauty competitions in Holland, Switzerland and France at the Grand Prix d'Elegance in Cannes. In the English-speaking part of the world the car earned such flowery statements as, "A dream comes true", "Sweetest thing on wheels" or "The sports car you've waited for". Also the car had success in GT Class Sport Rallies like the Tulip Rally in Holland and the Big Prize of Macao.

According to the Internet site of the German Mercedes Benz R129 SL-Club (http://www.129sl-club.de/start.html?/ns/inhalt.php) there were quite a few Celebrity 190 SL owners, not all well known in the US.

Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco (her 1958 is in the Stuttgart Museum)
    Ingrid Bergman
    Gina Lollobrigida
    Zsa Zsa Gabor
    Debbie Reynolds
    Lana Turner
    Oprah Winfrey
Yul Brynner (white 1958 bought in Vienna, then shipped to L.A.)
    Kirk Douglas
    Alfred Hitchock
Ringo Starr (in Stuttgart Museum, with 23,300 miles on it)
    Frank Sinatra
    Ismaili ruler, Karim Aga Khan
    Gunther Philipp, actor
    Bibi Johns, singer
    Margot Hielscher, actor/singer
    Freddy Quinn actor/singer
Toni Sailer, Olympian, 3 gold medals in skiing/actor
    Francoise Sagan, playwright, novelist, screenwriter
    Nadja Tiller, actress
    the Maharani of Jaipur
    Crown Prince Hassan of Morocco
    Count Bernadotte of Sweden
Rosemarie Nitribitt, prominent '50s German call girl

Neat List! You can add German fashion icon and mogul Karl Otto Lagerfeld who claims his 190sl was Rosemarie Nitribitt's! In 2006 Karl fell asleep at the wheel of his 190SL and totaled it ... he has not driven since.

The Ringo Starr 190sl' can not be in the Stuttgart Museum (may have been in past, but from the doc's has always been in UK). It was next to my car last Sunday, Mercedes Benz UK Club's SL Day and the owner lives twenty minutes from me in UK.
See attached photo of the DB190 - graphite grey - graphitegrau next to my car. This was painted red at some stage and then back to the DB190. The owner still has the original registration docuement with Ringo Starr's UK address. Around 27,000 miles now.

The Stuttgart Museum does have another 190sl in the same colour combination but his car is a ◦Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.3 AMG, 1984 (Ringo Starr)

see link in these photos: http://picasaweb.google.com/bodie.as...ichteZuMachen# Where you can see a 190sl and Ringo's 190E.

My 1960SL made a cameo appearance in the movie "The Servant" starring Dirk Bogarde, and was actually driven in the film by the lead actors. The car was originally delivered new in England, where the movie was made, and I have the original number plate that is clearly visible in the film (PK 2456). How it came to be in the movie is a mystery, but at least it gives the car a bit of character and history!

My son Michael happened upon yet another photograph of Grace Kelly and Frank Sinatra on the set of "High Society."

Quite an "eye catching" image of the two actors with the (real) star in between.

I was ecstatic a while back when I located this image of Yul Brynner with a 190SL roadster believing it was non other than my 1958. What threw me was the shade of the SL, as it is certainly not 608 (ivory) as is mine. The outfit also was not correct for the movie he was filming at the time when he orded my SL. In 1958 he was in Austria filming "Journey" with Deborah Kerr.

After speaking to Yul's only son Rock I found out that this photograph was taken in Madrid during the filming of "Solomon & Sheba." The original star of the film, Tyrone Power, died of a heart attack after a grueling dueling scene with George Sanders. Yul Brynner took over the role, though Power can still be seen in long shots. Yul was apparently on a break at the time and posed for this photograph while still in costume. (Filming dates were November 1958 thru March 1959 so the year of SL are unknown)

Rock Brynner said that his dad did not own this particular 190SL so someone somewhere might still have it in their possession.

    Tuesday Weld / Gil's prints

    Hi Derek, hi Alan,

Derek, on 1/11/10 you posted a pic showing Tuesday Weld, Alan, on 1/21/10 you posted some Gil's prints. Could you tell me where can I get these? I need them for a book project and I do not want any problems due to copyright.

    Thank you in advance

    Armin

Re: Tuesday Weld / Gil's prints

    Hi Armin,
I only have one print of this picture ..... and that had been on the wall of a Chicago restaurant for over 30 years! I found other images by searching on the web but I can remember where they came from. The title is "Quick Change Artist", maybe you can search for it. Sorry I couldn't help further.

    Hi Armin
Sorry, I too found the image of Tuesday Weld by searching on the web for 'cars and celebrities', but I can't remember where I found it.

I was actually looking to see if I could find a picture of Marilyn Monroe in a 190SL, but never did find one (if anyone has one....)
    Sorry I can't help further.....
