    Getting ready

Washed the car, vacuumed the floor. Is that enough?

Helen ... That may be too much too early. You need to save the clean until show time.

I say that but then my car will be the dirty one...... but I will drive it there and drive it home. Rather than cleaning, I spent my afternoon installing my rear carbon-Kevlar brake shoes. Slowly the car is getting ready.

I'm going to wax it too. Then I hope it will go 80 miles up the coast to Laguna Beach.

Walter: Are you going? Anybody planning a caravan so we can watch each other in case something falls apart during those 80 miles? Or is your car up in Costa Mesa?

    Helen,
so far you're the only one registered from San Diego. (aside from Scott Wallace in Carlsbad) I know Alan's car will have to be close to completion by next month as we need some more Best Of Show contenders.
At this point we have club "Road Warriors" driving their cars (not trailering) from as far away as Virginia, NY, Michigan, Indiana, and BC Canada. Incredible!

I hope so. My car is on stands right now. I have to put my new front shoes in. My brakes aren't safe at the moment because I soaked a shoe in oil when we tilted the car and I never could get it all boiled out.

I have a thousand things to do to it. It drives fine. It just does not stop safely. Then there are all the bling bling related items to attach. Eyebrows, and all manner of chrome boobles (all of which don't make the car drive any better!)

There may well be a better chance of our 300SL going then my 190SL! My dad is putting lots of time into the 300 at the moment and the grandkids are not cooperating so I have little wrench time with either car.

I have little hope the carpets will be in based on everybody's tight schedule. If I am lucky I will have a soft top to flop down, other wise the hardtop stays on. I just don't have a lot of time to work on cars....sigh....

    Back to real work....

I'm looking forward to seeing your car, Walter. With all of your input on the forum, it will be great to see your work in person. Will you enter it in Founder's class, the do-it-yourself class of restoration?

I was hoping for People's Choice as I do not qualify for the Founder's class.

At this point, the car is a drivable work in progress. Lot's of minor (time consuming) things to do. Time has flown by and I have not done as much as I had hoped to. We'll see, I guess.

Why don't you qualify for Founders?

Bill A.- Maybe I will contact Scott Wallace in Carlsbad if Walter is not ready. I would like company on the way up. Walter - I hope you will be ready. I would also love to see the 300SL. Haven't seen one in a while.
On Alan's car, his restorer told me that car will be shipped up, not driven. When I saw it a few weeks ago, it needed its interior finished and its soft top.

Helen, I know we have members down that way, counted 14 south of Carlsbad in the 2007 directory. We do have another member also in Carlsbad coming up, I'll send you info via email regarding other members driving up from your area as registrations come in. (up to about 90)

You can not have been in the automotive repair business, if I recall correctly.

My car drives. I just don't know if it will be all put together nice and pretty. The brakes are not a big deal. Just an afternoon. But, I have to find the time. I do not have a complete interior nor a soft top ready. But, I can park my rear in there and drive it.

There is nothing I’d like to do more than drive it up to Laguna Beach! My car had its first shakedown cruise last week and performed pretty well according to Brian. There are still lots of things to be done though, and it’s going to be tough getting everything working right in time for the convention. Brian, Alex and Fidel are working their fannies off tryng to get it fininshed in time.

On a personal note: I’ve been out of the loop the last couple of weeks because I’ve been dealing with some health issues with Amy. She’s going to be fine, but had to undergo some major surgery over the weekend and will need some help for a while, so my plans are kind of up in the air at the moment. If things go well, I still plan to be there. If I can’t make it, Brian has agreed to take the car up there for me. Its bad timing, but sometimes you’ve just got to play with the hand you’re dealt. Hopefully things will work out.
Here’s the status of the car as of last week.

People are far more important than cars. Wishing Amy a speedy recovery.
