    Before the Ball

If you have an extra day, plan to arrive in Williamsburg on Friday evening (September 16) so that you will have all day Saturday to enjoy the restored colonial area on your own, and benefit from a reduced-price ticket available through the club to see all the sites. We have also arranged reduced rates to stay in the restored area at The Williamsburg Inn, Lodge, Woodlands, and even in the historic colonial houses. Sunday morning will be our first organized meeting, when we will drive the Colonial Parkway to the Yorktown Battlefield and Visitors Center, and then visit the first English settlement at Jamestown. That evening, we have reserved a candlelight dinner at the King’s Arms Tavern, and perhaps will be serenaded with bawdy pub songs by roving minstrels (and may be even a few club members).

Monday morning we will leave Williamsburg and drive along the James River to visit some of the historic plantation homes at Westover, Berkeley Plantation (site of the first official Thanksgiving and birthplace of President William Henry Harrison) or Shirley Plantation (Virginia’s first plantation in 1613 - just six years after John Smith’s settlement at Jamestown). Next we will travel to Richmond, the capitol of the Confederacy during the Civil War, and visit The Confederate White House and museum, see St. John’s Church (where Patrick Henry gave his famous, “Give me liberty, or give me death!” speech), and then a teeth-chattering drive down the historic, cobbled Monument Avenue. Finally, we continue the hour drive to Charlottesville and the beginning of our convention.

Before The Ball – Lodging in Williamsburg

We have booked a limited number of rooms within a wide range of prices in Colonial Williamsburg for your consideration:

The Woodlands Hotel & Suites is located adjacent to the Williamsburg Visitors Center, and includes a complimentary continental breakfast. Our negotiated rate for a Superior Room is $119 per night. For further information, see: http://www.history.org/visit/hotels/woodlands/index.cfm

The Williamsburg Lodge is a very nice hotel located adjacent to the Williamsburg Inn in the restored colonial area. Our negotiated rate for a Superior Room is $179 per night, and $199 for a Deluxe Room. For further information, see: http://www.history.org/visit/hotels/...odge/index.cfm

The Williamsburg Inn is the area’s premier lodging, located in the restored colonial area. Our negotiated rate in the main building is $379 per night. For further information, see: http://www.history.org/visit/hotels/...gInn/index.cfm

Our first organized event will be Sunday morning, with trips along the Colonial Parkway to the revolutionary war battlefield at Yorktown and the first English settlement at Jamestown. We will then meet Sunday night for dinner in one of the colonial taverns. As a guest at one of the above hotels, you will be eligible for a significantly reduced-rate admission ticket of only $17.00 for all of the attractions within Colonial Williamsburg (good for your entire length of stay). As such, you may want to arrive on Friday or Saturday (or earlier!) to have more time to enjoy the historic charms.

Reservations must be made before Wednesday, August 17. The above room rates do not include a 10% and $2.00 per room per night occupancy tax.

Reservations can be made by:1) calling 800-261-9530 between the hours of 8:30am and 5:00pm EST, Monday through Friday, and providing the Group Name of “Mercedes 190SL Convention” and the Booking Code of “17741”; or
    2) go online anytime to https://resweb.passkey.com/go/17741 to make your own reservations.

Please also check availability and rates directly, as sometimes you may actually receive better rates than those negotiated for the group.

If you know of friends that are planning to attend the Before the Ball tour, you may want to contact them directly to make touring arrangements together. After you register for the 2011 Convention and make the selection to attend the Before the Ball tour, you will be notified by email about further tour arrangements. In the meantime, should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact you hosts, Brad and Pam Brady, at bradford.brady@comcast.net or at 804-364-8330.

    Sunday in Williamsburg

Susan and I would like to join the Sunday drive along the Colonial Parkway and the Monday drive from Williamsburg to Charlottesville. What time will you be heading out tomorrow to Yorktown & Jamestown and where will you be starting from?

    Cheers,

Huey -- Hey good to hear from you and it will be great to see you later today! I see our taste in cars run about the same ... a 190SL, my daily driver is an '83 300D and Susan drives a 5.0 liter SL.
