    After the Ball

    There are now two options available for the After the Ball tour - a Northern Tour and a Southern Tour (please see below for more information about the AFB Southern Tour). After the club breakfast on Friday morning, the After the Ball tour groups will depart. The ATB Northern Tour group will depart for the entrance to Skyline Drive and a trip along the entire length of the parkway, which meanders along the top of The Blue Ridge mountains. We will stop at Big Meadows for lunch in the national park lodge, and then continue to Front Royal. Late that afternoon we will be guests at White Post Restorations for a tour of their facilities and a peek at current cars being restored, and then spend the night nearby in Winchester. For those who want to sample some finer (and more expensive) lodging, there are two alternatives. The Inn at Little Washington offers first-class treatment and impeccable fine dining (though it is very expensive, and reservations are booked for months in advance). Another nice alternative would be to proceed to the quaint town of Middleburg and spend the night at the restored Red Fox Inn. Saturday morning the group will converge in Middleburg to enjoy the town and its quaint shops, and be treated to the scenic drives through Virginia’s hunt country. After lunch, we depart for the visitors center at Manassas Battlefield National Park, where we can stretch our legs and walk the hallowed, civil-war battlefields where Stonewall Jackson earned his nickname (“There he stands, like a stone wall!”). We end our tour there, on the outskirts of Washington, D.C., where everyone will then be free to make their own plans to enjoy the limitless sites at our nation’s capitol.

    After The Ball Lodging in Winchester

    At the end of the first day of our After the Ball Northern Route tour (Friday, September 23), we will spend the night in the charming town of Winchester, Virginia. We have made arrangements for a limited number of rooms at The George Washington, A Wyndham Grand Hotel (http://www.wyndham.com/hotels/DCAGW/main.wnt ).

    The per night room rates are:
    • $129 for standard king, queen or double beds;
    • $219 for Extended King;
    • $289 for Junior Suite;
    • $329 for Executive Suite; and
    • $369 for Luxury Suite.

    Reservations must be made before August 23. The above room rates do not include a 10% per night room tax or $4.00 daily parking fee and $1.50 in-room safe fee. A covered parking garage is provided.

    Reservations can be made by calling 877-999-3223 and providing the Group Code of “Mercedes 190SL”.

    Please also check availability and rates directly, as sometimes you may actually receive better rates than those negotiated for the group.

    Although there was original information provided about proceeding to Middleburg and spending the night at The Red Fox Inn, the current plan is to travel together to Middleburg in the morning, and then have lunch at The Red Fox Inn.

    For those interested in the Ultimate lodging and Dining experience, you may want to consider a detour to The Inn at Little Washington ( http://www.theinnatlittlewashington.com/ ). Lodging is very limited and must be made months in advance. Rates per night extend from $635 to $1,180 (but includes continental breakfast!). Dinner, which is a most memorable treat, is $168 per person.

    After you register for the 2011 Convention and make the selection to attend the After the Ball tour, you will be notified by email about further tour arrangements. In the meantime, should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact you hosts, Brad and Pam Brady, at bradford.brady@comcast.net or at 804-364-8330.

    The hotel Roanoke has arranged for the southern tour club participants to have a discounted rate for the Saturday night stay. The club rate will be $139 for the night and you must ask for the Mercedes Benz rate. This special rate can be reserved stating tomorrow 8/6/2011.
